How did you first get started in your craft?

I was in my Junior year studying at Cornish College of the Arts as a printmaker - beginning to get bored of 2D work. It was then I took a class in sculpture and discovered a newfound love for 3D work and creating with my hands. Soon I started working with clay - and sculpture started working its way into my art practice. I ended up making my entire senior thesis show an installation of ceramic sculptures. After graduating I continued building my ceramic practice. Until the pandemic, I was working and teaching at a studio in Ballard. Now I have a fully operating studio in my basement where I create and fire all my creations.

Favorite Artist(s) and/or Inspirations?

Agnes Martin. Natural and man-made which surfaces reveal their stories. Old industrial areas, rocks, the moon, saltwater, rivers, desolate landscapes, trees.

Growing up in Everett the sound has always served as a source of inspiration and forever will.

Favorite Piece You've Created?

This changes too often, but I feel like pieces with surfaces that take me by surprise. Sometimes I’m so unsure of how it will come out and then it ends up being so much better than I could have imagined. Part of the magic of ceramics. However, I enjoy making vessels/vases the most - objects that are more sculptural than functional.

What’s the most challenging part of being an artist, or something you had to overcome?

Being your own boss. It seems like the dream until you realize you have to do it all AND maintain inspiration. Creating, making, promoting, photography, webwork, social media, networking and taxes. It can be a lot but in the end, it’s so worth it. Just learning the balance can be tough.

How can people be supportive of the arts?

By supporting artists - especially local artists. Instead of buying art and products from Target or Amazon. Try looking in alternative places, I guarantee you’ll find items much more unique and meaningful.

Also, support your friends, don’t ask/expect a discount. Chances are they aren’t making much profit as it is. I fully believe artists deserve what they charge - pay full price and support the arts.
