A Not-So-Secret Sandwich Spot

To share or not to share, that is what I'm sitting here pondering as I write this review up for our wonderful Live in Everett blog. After several suggestions from friends and people in the know, I finally visited Heidi's Sandwichboard in our nearby town of Snohomish.

"Its my favorite place to eat in Snohomish."

"You've got to go and try the tuna sandwich. My favorite!"

"You need to do a write-up for the blog."

So many comments that on a delightfully sunny weekday morning, I headed across the valley for an early lunch at Heidi's. My girlfriend and I aimed to get there early to avoid the lunch rush and, hopefully, find parking in Snohomish (note to the City of Snohomish: you really really need to find a way to offer more parking in the main street area.) We both laughed when we walked in: it was 11:40 am and the place was packed! It seems all the insiders already knew to come early.

And that was my struggle on sharing this story: Heidi's is already popular and packed! And now that I know about it and how delicious it is, do I want others to know? I mean, I'm in on the secret and the wait was short. Why mess up a really good thing with a really big crowd? But the food was so perfect for a casual lunch out, that its only fair you all know about it too.

Heidi's has cold and hot sandwiches, soup, and salads. They offer an afternoon tea on weekends (on my to-do list!) and catering for parties. They also have a wine and cocktail menu and a dessert menu. It included a listing for "adult ice cream." Well, well, well, what is that? my curious self pondered. Turns out it's ice cream featuring coffee liqueur. Two of my favorites in one tantalizing sounding combo.

But for this lunch, we had sandwiches. We decided to try a cold and a hot so, after much debate and perusal of the menu, my friend, Diana, ordered the chicken salad sandwich with macaroni salad on the side and I got the Super Duper which was a hot pastrami sandwich with cheese and avocado and a side of potato salad.

We were huge thumbs up on both, which matched the huge size of our sandwiches. We had a choice of breads (including gluten free) and each sandwich had a large portion of the main feature plus shredded lettuce and tomatoes. Mine had avocado on it too which was an extra bit of yum. And both of us loved the salads we ordered. The macaroni salad included peppers and olives and my potato salad was smooth and creamy. I liked it as much as my sandwich. We both would order ours again but, one small note, I would call my "hot" sandwich more toasted than hot. Big deal -it was good!

The cafe has a warm, inviting, casual atmosphere that, while a little on the noisy side, was comfortable. We were greeted by Heidi herself and had friendly, quick service. You really need to plan a drive over but, please, just go by yourself. Don't tell anyone else. Let's just keep this one a bit of a secret so we can get in without a wait!

We live lucky my friends! - Jingle
