Southern Flavors West of Downtown: Grandma's in da Kitchen

One thing I love to see in 2020 is virtual word of mouth. Not just tagged photos where people are specifically getting the word out about places they love, but the little exchanges you see in unrelated comment threads, too. I saw a friend of a friend on Facebook mention that they've tried to go to Grandma's in da Kitchen a few times recently and found a line out the door each time. Good for them, I thought, and figured it was time to get some of their food delivered. 

If you go to the Grandma's website, you'll find GrubHub and DoorDash links for delivery as well as an online order form for pickup. My husband wanted to try the Alma T cake for dessert, and that wasn't on the Grubhub site, so DoorDash won. You'll notice only the small size of side dishes is listed there, and neither site has a specific option when ordering pie slices, so be sure to make use of special instructions.

Speaking of sides, two were missing from our order when it arrived. Our Dasher was nice enough to go back for them, but we ended up with a second helping of kale instead of baked beans. The good news is that the kale is absolutely delicious, smokey and salty with lots of layers of flavor. The macaroni and cheese was ok, and I wouldn't have minded a third serving of kale in its place.

Our sandwiches were fantastic. They come on big, toasty rolls and my shrimp po boy had crunchy shrimp spilling out and was dressed generously with spicy remoulade. Its heat wasn't overwhelming, but built with each bite leaving me warmed over and happy as I finished.

Garrett's fried chicken sandwich didn't have much of the special sauce, but also didn't need it. The chicken was perfectly fried and we agreed we need to get a bucket of fried chicken next time. Of course the ribs, jerk chicken, and all the other sandwiches sound pretty great, too.

There was no Alma T cake that day, so we ended up with lemon cake and pecan pie for dessert. Both were good, but I'm interested to see what's coming down the pike; owner Sharon Tolbert wants to turn the restaurant's former bar space into an ice cream and bakery bar which will specialize in diabetes-friendly, gluten-free, and vegan pastries. 

Originally from Knoxville, Tolbert has three culinary arts degrees and worked for many restaurants and caterers in the Seattle area before moving from Tacoma to Marysville so she could finally open her own restaurant in the former Jubie's space on W Marine View Drive. Grandma's in da Kitchen was passed over twice for Everett Cares grants and hasn't secured any other disaster funding, so please stop by or order delivery the next time you want some hearty, satisfying food. I think you'll agree this is a business we'd like to see stay open in our community for years to come.
