Adventure Spawns: Black Forest Mushrooms Opens Urban Farm & Mushroom Market in Everett

Black Forest Mushrooms had their grand opening for their new urban mushroom farm in Downtown Everett this last Saturday, and apparently, people are excited.

“This is the most people I’ve ever seen at a ribbon cutting,” Mayor Franklin shared from the podium at Saturday's ribbon cutting ceremony.

The grand opening included a mushroom happy hour, Ranger-led tours of Black Forest’s newly expanded mushroom farm, mushroom coffee, and mushroom pastries, and plenty of hyperlocal & wild mushroom varieties alongside mushroom-themed goodies available in Black Forest’s new Mushroom Market.

The energy on opening day was palpable as explorers foraged the Mushroom Market while waiting for the next farm tours to begin.

The farm tour offered awesome insight into Black Forest's process of how they work their mushroom magic. And no, we are not talking about magic mushrooms. Black Forest’s mission is to “Cultivate gourmet mushrooms and healthy communities in the legendary Pacific Northwest.”

While Black Forest Mushrooms' urban farm in Downtown Everett is new, they have been cultivating this adventure for a while. They recently released their first YouTube video, which does a great job of giving an overview of what they’re all about.

In the video, Black Forest Mushrooms CEO and founder Nathanel Engen shares his origin story of what inspired his journey to turn his two-car garage into a controlled environment mushroom farm and begin selling at local farmers markets in 2022.

In short, Nathanael is passionate about cultivating and delivering healthy, quality mushrooms to the local community. He desires for no one to fall victim to slimy, gross mushrooms that were harvested days or weeks ago.

“I knew our community deserved something better, so I got to work,” Nathanael shares.

And getting to work, Nathanael sure has. The new urban farm is 10,000 square feet, making it over 20 times larger than Nathanael's humble beginnings in the garage.

We enjoyed meeting with Nathanael last year and are not surprised to see his rapid progress. He is passionate and aligned with his mushroom mission, and we’re delighted he has chosen Everett to launch the adventure.
