Petrikor, Modern General Store: Every Thing Is Beautiful

Wonderful news, friends. Downtown Everett just got a great upgrade: Petikor is officially open.

In case you’re wondering about the name … ‘Petrichor’, is defined as “the earthy smell created when rain hits the dry ground.”

‘Petrikor’, the new store in Everett, as they share on their website is, “a general store for the modern dweller, rooted in time-honored traditions and design, with a focus on thoughtfully made and sustainable products.”

Emphasis on ‘thoughtful’.

Owned by Aaron Sheckler and Scott Hulme, they started selling online last year before opening their doors to their brick-and-mortar location last month in May 2022. I’ve been following Petrikor on their Instagram for a while, and it does not take long to realize they overflow with thoughtfulness in everything they do.

I stopped by on a recent afternoon. It was a treat to visit Petrikor in person.

The wonderfully historic building with its high ceilings and open flow really warrants its own story. Petrikor’s overflow of thoughtfulness spills right over into their products.

Every thing is beautiful.

From the product selections to their displays. Color schemes. Branding. No detail is left unnoticed.

Co-owner Aaron Sheckler was there when I visited. As we chatted, he was behind the counter, or the “U bar”, which is a large “U” shaped bar just like it sounds, a space they plan to use for various types of classes.

Aaron and I discussed how certain staples simply haven’t been available in downtown Everett. One in particular I felt was missing that I was glad to see Petrikor is providing is fresh flowers. They get fresh flowers delivered from a local farmer every Thursday.

Brooms. Toolboxes. Incense. Quality curated options, far from the cheap stuff you’d find at big box stores.

Things are off to a good start. Aaron shared, “The first week our inventory got wiped out. From when we did our soft opening about a month ago, we’ve already doubled our inventory.”

It’s always great to hear about a small business doing well in this day and age. But of course, opening a new business still comes with its challenges. Aaron shared one of the toughest things is how vulnerable it is. “You're putting your taste out there, what you like, and how you like to display it. You’re really putting yourself out there in a lot of ways.”

Aaron shared that multiple people had already poked their heads in the door, glanced around, and proclaimed, “this will never last, this business is not going to work.”

Ouch.

Add on the underlying concerns that come along with being a gay couple, Aaron shared how their sexual orientation only adds to the potential challenges.

Thankfully, the vast majority of the feedback and experiences have been outstandingly positive so far. They already have regulars who are coming back every week.

I wasn’t surprised to learn Aaron’s favorite part of the business is, “interacting with the community.” Stop in and say hello.
