Fresh from the Oven: Meet the Bakers of the Everett Farmers Market
Story by Karen Erickson. Photography by Sylvia Blaauw.
One of the things I love about the Everett Farmers Market is getting to know the people behind the booths. We talk a lot about what’s growing on the farms, but there are also some pretty wonderful things coming out of ovens each week.
There are far more bakers and baked goods vendors than I could fit into one story, so I thought I’d introduce you to six of them — some who have been part of the market for years and others who are newer faces.
Darlene from Baked Goods showcasing some delectable treats.
Baked Goods has been part of the market since the waterfront days. Darlene is a longtime farmers market baker, especially known for her Rice Krispie treats, along with cookies, bars, little fruit pies and mini lemon bars. When local fruit is in season, you’ll often find it tucked into those pies.
An assortment of baked goods from Snohomish Bakery.
Snohomish Bakery is another of the Everett Farmers Market’s longtime vendors, going back to the waterfront days. Andy Papadatos and Ingrid Harten started their bakery from a shared love of good, rustic bread. Bread was at the heart of what they were doing in the beginning, and over the years their Snohomish bakery and café has grown to include cinnamon rolls, Danish, cookies and plenty of other favorites.
Deborah with Forever Moore Sweets
Forever Moore Sweets has a completely different story. After 26 years as a Boeing engineer, Deborah Moore turned her long-time love of baking into a second career. She joined the Everett Farmers Market in 2021, bringing colorful macarons, specialty cookies and other sweets to her booth.
All the flavor, none of the gluten at Hunter’s Gluten-Free Bakery.
Hunter’s Gluten-Free Bakery grew out of a personal need. After dealing with gluten intolerance and missing the baked treats they loved, the family began experimenting in their own kitchen. Hunter’s is one of the Everett Farmers Market’s newer additions, and today everything is baked gluten-free right here in Everett.
Dive into a taste of the tropics at Jennifer’s Tropical Baking Sweets.
Tropical Baking Sweets is another newer addition to the Everett Farmers Market. Jennifer started the business after moving to Washington during the pandemic, bringing with her the Puerto Rican flavors and baking traditions she grew up with. Her quesitos — sweet cheese-filled pastries — and guava pastelillos are a chance to try something you may not have discovered before.
Tasty desserts are Patrick’s speciality at Whidbey Sweets n Tarts.
And then there’s Whidbey Sweets n Tarts. Patrick has been making the trip from Freeland on Whidbey Island since the market was on the waterfront. There’s almost always a line at his booth for gooey bars, lemon bars and rich triple-chocolate walnut bars.
These are only six of the bakers you’ll find at the Everett Farmers Market, and each has a story that goes beyond what’s sitting on the table. Getting to know the people behind those booths is one of the things I’ve enjoyed most over the years.
The Everett Farmers Market is open Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 25th at 2930 Wetmore Avenue in downtown Everett.
