Worth Leaving Town For: Kosta's Mediterranean Cuisine

I have a little secret to share with you, Everett. I’ve been eating at Kosta’s in Mukilteo for as long as I can remember. It opened in 1996 so I guess it was sometime around there. I live in southwest Everett so I don’t really consider it “leaving town” because it is closer than a trip to north Everett for me.

It’s one of those places you take your friends and then they take theirs. I took my husband, who then took his supervisor at Zumiez HQ. She took her team and then come review time, every one of them picked Kosta’s for their review lunch. She ate there an entire week. And did not complain.

Kosta’s is owned by Marie and Kosta Christopoulos, some of the nicest people around. Kosta is usually there when we visit and he always says hello and asks about my parents who introduced me to the restaurant.

Kosta’s offers Mediterranean cuisines with a focus on Greek food and they make excellent pasta dishes. There really is something for everyone with fresh salads, steaks, ribs and chicken. The ribs are one of my dad’s favorites. They have 12-inch pizzas and a few options for kids including chicken strips. I picked up dinner for my family and here’s a rundown of our exceptional meal.

When Kosta asks if you want bread, say yes. I love this bread so much that it makes me miss sitting at a table at Kosta’s waiting for a meal. In the restaurant, they serve this bread hot from the oven with its perfectly crisp crust. It’s served with a whipped butter that melts on contact. Getting it with take-out wasn’t quite the same but still delicious.

My son ordered Maria’s Favorite Pasta. It is made with amazingly fresh noodles, sauteed mushrooms and artichoke hearts finished with extra virgin olive oil and perfectly tangy feta cheese. It is a huge serving and he had half leftover for lunch the next day. For his side, he picked avgolemono, a rich, authentic greek chicken soup with lemon, egg and rice.

Kosta’s Favorite Spaghetti is what my husband most often orders. He likes it with Italian sausage and topped with a housemade marinara and mizithra cheese, it makes a very hearty meal. Technically, there is plenty for two meals, but sometimes because it is just so good, you eat it all, which he did. He went for a dinner salad for his side.

I ordered the Gyro Plate with Feta and oh, it was amazing. I usually order a vegetarian gyro from the lunch menu, but I don’t think there is any going back after tasting that tender gyro meat. I had to stop myself from eating the entire thing to save some for lunch the next day. The Gyro Plate comes with Greek potatoes that were cooked nice and tender. I always order a Greek salad for my side. It is full of chunky cucumber, tomato, red onion, romaine and topped with a few kalamata olives and a delicious Greek dressing. It’s a perfect Greek salad.

It was all perfect and always is. There’s a reason a business that opened in 1996 is still around. I hope you will give my favorite restaurant a try because it really is worth leaving town for.

The elephant in the room or rather the tower of styrofoam after every takeout meal has been difficult for me. I want to support our local businesses and now is not the time to demand that they source new take-out containers. So I’m happy that I just received my Ridwell box and recycling bags. Though I know where to go to recycle most things like plastic bags, light bulbs and batteries, I subscribed to the new Everett service to support the business concept. They are making recycling easy so I hope in the future everyone will have an opportunity to participate.

Back to the styrofoam. They recycle it!!! There is nowhere around here that does but Ridwell gave me a large bag to collect it and then when it is full, they will pick it up on my regular pick-up day for a $9 fee. It’s a little pricy, but I feel so much better about not having to throw the styrofoam in the trash. If you want to get in on the Ridwell action click here
