A Pizza House: All That and Chicken Tikka

We like pizza. A lot. But in all of our pizza eating we had yet to try A Pizza House.

We finally fixed that.

Nestled at the end of a strip mall on the corner of Colby and Everett Avenue, A Pizza House has been open for over 10 years. The restaurant is small with less than a dozen tables and a few bar seats up against the front window. The kitchen and pizza oven take up over half of the floor space and the store is hot and stuffy. But the really neat part? You can watch your pizza roll out of the oven. It then gets sliced quickly and efficiently by a very large knife (I have decided that I need one at home), boxed up, and handed over hot and steaming.

A Pizza House offers a selection of pizzas that include the standard combinations plus some that you don’t typically see in a pizza place. Like the Chicken Tikka pizza that I chose: marinated masala chicken, onion, mushrooms, green pepper, jalapenos, and mozzarella. It was far better than I expected and very spicy. I like chicken Tikka Masala so having it on pizza was a fun departure from the norm.

My boyfriend’s favorite pizza is Hawaiian so he ordered a small sized Super Hawaiian: extra Canadian bacon, extra pineapple, extra bacon bits, and mozzarella. I had a bite of his pizza and it was very good. We had never had bacon bits on a Hawaiian pizza before but it worked! He ate his whole pizza and communicated to me in grunts. Which is an indication that he really enjoyed his pie.

The sauce is a bit sweeter than I’m used to but it was not overpoweringly sweet and I did enjoy it. Sauce application was just right, it wasn’t oozing off the slices, but you got sauce in every bite. And maybe I’m weird, but I really like having the last few bites of toppings be a bit more saucy than the rest. The cheese was a nice blanket over the toppings to hold it all together.

This pizza checked all my boxes for what I consider a good pizza. And the small size gave me enough for dinner and breakfast the following morning. (I bet you’re thinking “Spicy pizza for breakfast???!!! She is weird!” It is probably true.)

While the menu indicates “no substitutions”, there are enough combinations available to please any palette. It doesn’t specify but it looks like you can make your own pizza from a list of available toppings. A Pizza House also offers a few pasta dishes, buffalo wings, salads, calzones, toasted subs, and desserts, with a big selection of beverages in a cooler. We want to return and try some of the other menu items, and get another spicy pizza for breakfast.
