My First Pub Trivia: The Buzz Inn Steakhouse

I am a trivia nerd.

I watch Jeopardy every night. My husband and I even participated in a Jeopardy calendar competition and won! Since actual Jeopardy contestants consistently mention pub trivia, I made it my goal to play this year.

Finally, this past Thursday I got my chance! My husband and I attended Pub Trivia night at Buzz Inn Steakhouse on Evergreen. One of the servers introduced me to James, the trivia master. He gave me a clipboard with two blank trivia sheets and told us that screens up on the walls would display four rounds of questions. I was feeling cautiously optimistic, hoping for a round in my wheelhouse of entertainment or literature or science, my husband’s expertise. I ordered my drink and settled in, my eyes peeled to the screen.

First category: elections. I wasn’t the only one groaning. The true/false questions concerned odd election laws, political parties, and an Elvis-sighting. After switching and grading the answers of the team beside us, we were ready for the second category, anagrams of cities in Snohomish County. This was clearly a gimme category which everyone aced. At intermission, James read out the scores. Amazingly, we were only one point behind the leading team. Now I was feeling good about our chances to win this thing! C’mon Broadway musicals! Construction Tools? All I know about tools I learned from Tim and Al on Home Improvement. As tool after tool appeared on the screen, my husband recognized a few, but most baffled us, resembling medieval torture devices or sci-fi weapons. Of course, our competition were both DIY experts, and extended their lead over us.

We weren’t giving up though! The last category had to be something we knew, right? Nope. Patron Saints. I could tell by the language and humor, that most of this group had probably not been to Mass recently, but I was still worried. What chance did a couple non-denominational Protestants have in matching obscure saints to the groups they protect, especially when the occupations ranged from bartender to farrier and tanner. Somehow some of our Sunday School knowledge helped us make some educated guesses, and we scored fairly well.

We waited anxiously while James totaled the scores and announced them from lowest to highest, dramatically pausing before he read the second-place prize winner. I could hardly believe it! We won second place! Our trivia team neighbors were declared the champions. Everyone cheered as we were given our prize, a $15 gift card to Buzz Inn, which we decided to cash in next Thursday when we return for a rematch! Here’s hoping for a round on 80s tv theme songs!
