What's the Story: Everett ROCKS

Editor’s note: Originally published January 12, 2017. Updated September 9, 2021.

Editor's Note: We recently discovered Everett Rocks. A Facebook group where people around Everett paint rocks and hide them for others to find, delight in, and post pictures of their findings back on the Everett Rocks Facebook page. Here's a short interview with the woman who started Everett Rocks, Christy Rockney.

What is Everett Rocks? Are you guys some kind of band?

No, we are not a Band... lol. We are a group of individuals that really enjoy making people smile with our art. We are a community inside a community.

When did you start Everett Rocks?

September 9, 2016.

What was your inspiration to start the group?

I found a painted rock from another group and it made me smile. I looked to see if Everett had a group of their own, and they didn’t. So I decided I would start my own and enjoy the adventure that it took me on.

Who is Everett Rocks for?

Everyone. All ages from 0-infinity! We welcome everyone from all walks of life.

What kind of feedback have you been getting from people who hear about Everett Rocks?

They love it! We have had people tell us it helps them with their depression and anxiety. It makes them feel like they are part of a community. Members have said that it gets them out of the house and gives them something to do with their kids. It’s like a treasure hunt. People always smile when they find an unexpected gift!

Do you have any fun stories about finding or hiding rocks? Or someone trying to bust you because they thought you were leaving litter behind?

I have had people watch me to see what I’m doing 'cause when it's busy or crowded I try to be sneaky so it’s a surprise for someone to find. I’ve gotten really excited when finding one and whooped and hollered and looked around and realized there were other people around watching.

Where's your favorite place to hide rocks?

Parks, beaches, around town. You can find them on benches, in a tree, on a porch, by a telephone, on a shelf in a store, at a drive-thru window, on top of a gas pump. The possibilities are endless.

What are some of your favorite Everett rocks that you've made, seen, or found?

Lots of beautiful Mandalas, cute bugs, the ones little kids paint that you can tell they are young cause you can’t quite tell what it is but you know that little one was really proud of their work. The ones with inspirational sayings or cute quotes. Disney characters (made by my daughter Savannah Sidhu).

Where's the best place to look for rocks? Both painted and also natural ones to paint?

Painted are the same as listed above. As for the naked ones or as we like to call them canvas … you can purchase them from Home Depot, from craft stores and you can even find them in your yard or while you're walking down the street.

Can anyone join the Everett Rocks Facebook group? If so, how can people get started?

Yes, anyone can join. All you gotta do is send a request and you will be accepted. It's really that simple.
