Teto’s Supermarket & Taqueria: Meat-eaters Rejoice

Someone told me about the amazing tacos at Teto’s which is in southwest Everett. I kept forgetting to check it out, probably because it is tucked deep into the shopping center at 112th and Highway 99 and you can’t really see it when you drive by. But I was reminded of it recently when I went to do my story on Touba Bakery in that same shopping center.

I decided to get lunch for me and my son, who is my constant companion now that kids have nowhere to go. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but was greeted by a friendly high school student at the front counter. He told me his father owned the market and was part owner of Patty’s Eggnest on 128th. He took me toward the back of the store where the taqueria is located.

The menu is pretty simple: specials, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas and sopes. For each item, there are many meat options: asada, abobada, lengua, chorizo, carnitas, pollo and buche. There are no vegetarian options.

Tacos are $2.79 each or 5 for $10.99. I knew we would not eat 5 tacos so we went with 3. I decided to try asada, pollo and carnitas tacos. Going with only 3 was a good decision because they were packed with meat. I lean toward being a vegetarian, so I took some of the meat out before eating the tacos. The meat was tender and flavorful with a slight heat. An accompanying green and red salsa could be used to add some heat to meet your desired level.

I also ordered pollo sopes. They were 3 for $10.99. I’ve never had a sope and had to ask what they are. Taco fixings on thick corn tortillas, yes, please! They are kind of the Mexican version of the Indian tacos I make at home.

I liked the sopes better than the tacos. The corn flavor was amazing, but again there was a ton of meat. I may have scraped off all the toppings and ate just the corn sope. I plan on learning how to make sopes so I can do a vegetarian version at home.

In hindsight, I am probably not the best person to review Teto’s, but I think that meat lovers would really love this place and the prices are a bargain considering how much meat comes with each serving.

Teto’s was fun to visit. I learned that this is where they sell Takis (very hot tortilla chips) that the elementary school kids challenge each other to eat. They had piñatas hanging from the ceiling and rows and rows of Mexican style snacks and colorful sodas. I don’t drink much soda, but now and again love a Mexican coke from a bottle and they had them in two sizes.

Next time you are in the south end, I hope you’ll stop by and check out Teto’s.
