Fresh Forward: Amazing Mexican Snacks and Drinks at Mis Antojitos

I meant to make my way down to Mis Antojitos in “Everett's Coolest Strip Mall” for several weeks, but was a little intimidated by the menu. In a good way, though. Everything looked so tasty.

Finally I decided to call in some reinforcements and assembled the Chew Crew: me of course, plus two regular lunch buddies and fellow food fanatics, Mellzah and Erika.

Without a sense of how generous the portions are at Mis Antojitos, I figured we should have a little something before we got there. I asked them to meet me at Middleton Brewing because I've been curious about their pizzas. Silly me for not checking the hours while drooling over the menu; Middleton doesn't open until 2 p.m. So after a quick trip to Basil, we came back to Mis Antojitos for treats.

We tried each other's orders and everything was great. So great in fact, we each decided to do our own review.

Mellzah, tosti esquite

Mellzah, tosti esquite

I discovered my love for the elote/esquite just last year, so now I take advantage of every opportunity I have to eat corn slathered with mayonnaise and cotija cheese to make up for lost time. At Mis Antojitos, the tosti esquite is a bed of seasoned tostitos topped with sweet yellow corn, a bit of green onion, cotija, and your choice of mayonnaise or sour cream. I opted for mayo and the resulting combination was a perfectly addictive corn-on-corn mix of sweet, creamy, salty, and crunchy. The tosti esquite was so delicious that the leftovers I brought home were rapidly devoured despite my alleged fullness less than half an hour earlier. They're tastiest at Mis Antojitos, however—once the chips have a chance to get soggy, it's a different experience.

Erika, duro esquite and fruta rayada

Erika, duro esquite and fruta rayada

The duro esquite was truly fantastic, and a meal unto itself. I couldn't resist ordering it after realizing that the duros were the same snack that my mom cooked for me and my sister when we were younger. Duros are wagon wheel shaped pieces of what is essentially pasta, fried until puffy and light. They formed the base of what turned out to be something reminiscent of vegetable nachos without cheese. Cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, and corn covered the duros, and the entire ensemble is drizzled with your choice of sour cream or mayonnaise. The mayonnaise and vegetables soaked into the duros, creating bites that were both soft and crispy at the same time, and the vegetables worked together to create a refreshing, light flavor profile. The next time I come back to Mis Antojitos, it will be hard to order anything else.

To balance out my savory choice with something sweet, I chose fruta rayada with pineapple juice. I hesitate to call it a drink, because the cup was absolutely packed with shredded cucumber, carrot, and jicama, then topped off with what seemed to be freshly made pineapple juice. No matter what category it's in, it was one of the most refreshing things I've ever eaten/drank. Immediately, we all agreed that this is what we would want while laying on the beach. My only regret when it comes to this meal was that I wasn't more hungry, but luckily, the fruta rayada kept well in my fridge at home and was just as refreshing sitting on the couch later that day.

Christopher’s Review

Christopher: tosti fruta and mangonada blend

Christopher: tosti fruta and mangonada blend

Not realizing the sauce in the photo was optional and to be added at the table, I ended up ordering one of the most simple dishes, the tosti fruta. It's a big serving of freshly-cut cucumbers, watermelon, jicama, and mango, with a nice pile of tostitos on top. It was all good, but the mango was definitely the star. Big, tasty spears that clearly hadn't been laying out. So much pre-cut mango is slimy and disappointing, once you've had it at Mis Antojitos, you'll accept nothing less.

I had more of it in my mangonada blend, the most over-the-top drink I've had in years. It's mango, chili sauce and tajin blended with ice, then topped with candy-coated nuts and chili candy rope. There's even a packet of another kind of sauce under the lid, plus a big chili candy-coated straw.

I recommend asking for a spoon and being ready to contain or clean the mess when you take off the lid. The flavor just can't be contained.

Don't make the mistake we did. Show up hungry and you'll leave happy. Mis Antojitos is bright, cheery, and friendly. You and your crew will love it.
