Meet Everett Band Narrow Tarot

In true Everett fashion, the four-piece rock and roll band Narrow Tarot are super cool and fly under the radar. The first time you hear their dual-vocal lines and synth riffs you’ll probably be like why haven’t I heard this band before?

For my money, Narrow Tarot is one of the freshest acts in our mill town. As part of a wave of young talent transforming arts venues on Hewitt Avenue, NT bring a bluesy spaced-out rock and roll aesthetic to a city increasingly known for its independent music. They sound like the B-52s jamming with Bob Dylan and Queens of the Stone Age ... sort of.

The band is made up of Joe Krassin (drums), Marcus Chavez (bass), Tessa Tasakos (keys/vocals), and Trevor Fett (guitar/vocals).

I caught up with Narrow Tarot in my backyard in Delta to talk about the New Mexicans restaurant, the tarot, Market Basket, and mannequin ghosts.

Here’s a shortened version of the full convo.

LIEv: You guys recently finished a residency at the Vintage Cafe. What do you think of that place?

Trevor: It’s such a cool, classic atmosphere, the brick wall and the lighting. It’s a little different to run sound in there — it’s so long, so cold. The staff treats you well. Now I have a certain affinity for The Vintage. The best marquee in town, that's for sure.

LIEv: What’s the best dish and/or drink to get at the New Mexicans?

Trevor: The best bang for your buck is the green enchilada, hands down. The most tasty dish is the pulled pork sandwich. They smoke the pork in the smoker out back. The barbecue [sauce] is tangy, homemade, and sweet — pairs well with the homemade bun that’s fresh-made every day. I’ve never had a pulled pork sandwich like that, at all. I get coleslaw on the side, but you can get cornbread, you can get baked beans, you can get potato salad. The margaritas — the limes are fresh.

LIEv: What’s the significance of the tarot, the symbology? Do the cards make their way into your music? Or is it more of a fun name?

Tessa: Sometimes we pull inspiration with writing from tarot cards. A lot of time Trev will pull a card and see what it inspires in him. Or we’ll read about it a little bit and write a song or a poem based around that.

Trevor: I’ve written a few songs that are very pulled from the tarot world. The poetry that the tarot provides has seeped its way into some of the songs that I’ve written, and poems, too.

LIEv: You all are based in Riverside. How do you like the neighborhood over there?

Trevor: I love Riverside. The views you get sometimes looking out east towards the mountain range and seeing the Snohomish River flowing — it’s breathtaking. The neighbors are so kind, they just care about you and what’s going on. They want to be very involved in your life, which is cool — it’s something I had to kind of get used to. I like, you know, knowing what Rick’s up to, like going to talk to neighbor Rick. Aaron’s always checking in and being like how you doing, bud. So I like that aspect of the neighborly, friendly [Riverside] vibe.

Tessa: There’s quite a few musicians in the Riverside community, as well. We’ve got a bassist a couple doors down, there’s a guitarist behind us, a drummer a couple doors down. I heard that there’s a saxophonist like down the road. I’m like, damn, we should get all these people together and get a Riverside band!

LIEv: Is there a new album in the works for Narrow Tarot?

Trevor: We’re in the very beginning stages of a new record, yeah. We have so many songs. Because we write songs like it’s nobody’s business. We have a lot that we need to lay down.

Tessa: We have enough material for probably two albums.

Trevor: Yeah, we’re hashing it out. We’re deliberating about the next step in the process, which is, like, where to record. But, yeah, it’s in the works I’d say.
