Adulting: Things I Learned About Insurance and Life by Switching to McClain

As I was prepping for a trip out of the country, I had some questions regarding travel and life insurance (you know, in-case the plane crashed, or my stuff got stolen or whatever). I like to talk, and had a ton of questions, so rather than Googling, I picked up the phone and called Nick from McClain Insurance. He schooled me good, while covering my butt with a proper adult's worth of insurance coverage.

Before I get any further, I want to qualify, McClain Insurance is a sponsor of Live in Everett. However, they're not dictating/influencing this post. I am a happy customer.

Here's what I learned/changed about my insurance coverage.

1. Local folks can handle my needs.
I'm insured with Pemco, and in the past I've dealt directly with the main Seattle office, rather than a local broker. Upon calling McClain, I learned that they represent Pemco and could start servicing my insurance.

Basically, by switching to McClain, I have a direct number and email to talk to my guy, Nick, who knows me and my wife personally. This was a no-brainier. Also, it didn't cost me anything extra. They represent a bunch of major insurance companies, so there's a good chance they can take care of you, too.

2. Being an adult means having adult insurance.
My wife and I were totally under-insured with auto liability insurance. When I first signed up for auto insurance when I was 16, I was broke. So, I shopped for whoever would give me the bare-minimum insurance required by law, and this was fine back when all I owned was a guitar and a disc-man. However, it doesn't work if you own any 'adult' assets. Nick helped me tweak some things on my insurance plan and got me way-more coverage for the extra monthly cost of about two trips to Taco Bell.

3. I can travel worry-free.
If you have it, your home-owner's insurance covers your stuff while you travel. Yep, this blew my mind. Basically, if someone would have stolen my camera while I was traveling, my home-owner's insurance would have covered it. I still think this is crazy and awesome.

4. Life insurance is actually affordable, and important.
Term life insurance is cheap, and easy to get. You should have it. Basically, if I die, my wife will be good and covered. The monthly cost is about the same as a Friday night bar tab.

5. If we lose our wedding rings, we're covered.
For the monthly cost of a cheeseburger, we have some valuable extra peace of mind.

6. Earthquake insurance is probably a good idea.
You know, with the big one coming and all. McClain can help you with earthquake insurance and honestly, I'm still considering it. I'm kinda hanging onto nihilism from my 20's that says I'll probably die in an earthquake anyway, so I'll let my life insurance pick up the tab for anyone who survives.

7. McClain is next to Costco and I like that.
Mainly, this just taught me that I am a boring adult who buys his socks and toothpaste at Costco.

Ready to adult with me? They say you should look at your insurance coverage every couple of years. If you need something tweaked, added, or maybe wanna save some coin, give McClain a call at (425) 379-9200 or visit them on the web here. Nick Pembroke is my guy, although the whole staff seem to be smart, caring and lovely people.
