Sketchy Everett Volume 40: Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens
Awaken your senses to the wonders that bloom within the Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens this spring season. Nestled in the heart of North Everett’s American Legion Memorial Park, between the golf course and the Hibulb Lookout overlooking Port Gardner, is a 3.5-acre providential garden paradise peppered with large-scale art sculptures, a fanciful fountain, and an array of arboreal delights—all lovingly maintained by local volunteers.
Amid a rare day that graced us with sunlight and blue skies in place of the typical dreariness of spring showers, I eagerly packed my sketching supplies and a rain slicker (just in case) and headed for the arboretum. I spent hours exploring the botanical beauty of the 11 themed gardens—each of which has its own volunteer curator.
Throughout my sketching journey, I encountered radiant gardens like the Urban Tree Walk, Japanese Maple Grove, and Horizontal Rock Garden. I also witnessed dozens of people taking advantage of the sunshine and luscious landscape to meet up with friends, shoot their senior portrait photos, and stroll in contemplative solitude. I even crossed paths with Eileen Simmons, the former library director-turned garden volunteer program organizer. Donning a large garden hat, overalls, and a sun-kissed complexion that comes from working outdoors, I barely recognized her—especially without a book in her hand!
