If you managed to find a Christmas tree during the pandemic Christmas tree shortage, it is probably dropping needles and turning into a fire hazard at this point. We’ve got some tips for ditching your tree.

Repurpose

Give the environment a boost in your own yard by repurposing your tree. Please make sure your tree is completely clean of decorations that may harm wildlife or the environment.

  • Tuck your tree away in your yard to provide shelter for birds and other wildlife. Make sure you don’t put your tree close to your home because it creates a fire hazard.

  • Start a compost bin with the branches of the tree which will allow for needed airflow in your bin.

  • Make perennial mulch by lopping off branches and placing them over perennials in your garden. This will protect them from frost and prevent soil compacting.

Scouts

Stop by the convenient Scouts’ tree recycling events at the beginning of January. Collecting trees is one way Scouts raise money so give the kids a donation.

Garbage Collection

Getting rid of your tree can be as easy as dragging it to the curb, but there may be extra charges if you don’t put it in your yard waste toter.

Cut up your unflocked, undecorated tree and put it in the yard waste toter. Make sure the lid closes so you don't cause damage to the collection truck or put employees in harm's way. Also, regardless of size or decorations, you can place your tree next to your trash for disposal.

Waste Management

They will take up to 4-foot trees for recycling as long as there is no flocking or decorations. Taller undecorated trees should be cut up and put it in your yard waste toter, making sure the lid closes.
