6 Summer Day Camps for Every Kind of Kid

If you’re a parent (like me) the summertime brings with it a flood of conflicting emotions. On the one hand, “Yay! The sun is out! The kids are home! Let’s go to the beach! Let’s go to the park!  Let’s go on a hike!” On the other hand, “The kids are home...and driving each other nuts...and driving me nuts...and already saying, “I’m bored”.

“I’m bored.” The words that will make even the most reasonable and patient parent twitch (and maybe curse a little under their breath). This is the moment I unroll the list of chores. But if you’re kinder than I am, or maybe you just know how to plan ahead a tad, you could avoid this scene altogether because there is certainly no reason to be bored in Everett!

Check out these six area camps that your kids and/or teens won’t want to miss.

1. Dance Off
For the dancer/mover in your house, how about try The Dance School? These welcoming dance instructors offer classes from ballet to hip-hop and everything in between. These are mostly one hour a day, week long classes so there’s still plenty of time for other family adventures. Who knows, maybe your young one will like these classes so much they’ll want to continue dancing in the fall. Sometimes it just takes one great experience to find a new love. Click here to find out more.

2. Art Anyone?
If you have a child who attends Everett Public Schools, chances are they went to the Schack Art Center on a field trip recently (three of my kids did)! The Schack Art Center is found on Hoyt Avenue in downtown Everett. This beautiful place has a ridiculous number of cool camps to choose from for your creative child or teen.

Some examples? Glassblowing, digital photography, ceramic castle class, acrylic painting camp, cartooning camp and lots of others intriguing choices. These hands-on camps and classes start at age 6 and go through high school age. Here’s their website so you can sign up!

3. Climb On
Here’s a unique camp idea: Summit Camp! Yep, that’s climbing. And how cool is that?! These are four day a week, all day camps and they also offer before and after care.

In this camp your kiddo will learn how to harness up and scale the walls- right here on Rucker Avenue at Summit Everett. That’s better than climbing the walls at home, right? Check out this link to find out if this camp is right for your youth.

4. Take The Stage
If art, dancing or climbing is not your child’s idea of a good time, he or she might enjoy getting on stage at theater camp. These camps at Village Theatre are themed after all kinds of interesting ideas and characters like Harry Potter, Pokemon, Under the Sea and Aladdin. They are specific for different ages and offer morning, afternoon or all day camps.  Here’s the link!

5. Y...not
If you’re looking for a full day camp where your kiddo will have a variety of fun things to experience, check out the YMCA of Snohomish County, Discovery Camps. Hosted at local elementary schools, each week focuses on a new interesting theme for your child to learn and explore. Games, field trips, multicultural experiences, science and art are just some of the activities highlighted.

The YMCA also offers financial assistance for those who qualify. Here is the link to the YMCA catalogue which includes other classes and summer fun experiences like swimming and horse camp.

6. Parks and Rec.
If you haven’t found what you’re looking for in the above options, the Everett Parks and Recreation Department is bound to have something to your kiddos liking. Tons of sports, swimming, gymnastics, lego, animal farm and nature camps and classes can be taken through Everett Parks and Rec.

Spend some time perusing their catalogue and you’ll probably find something for yourself too!  Yoga anyone? How about TaiChi? Everett Parks and Recreation also has scholarships available. Check it out!
