Dine, Donate, Support Ukraine

Serve good food and support a good cause? That’s what local food trucks are doing by gathering donations for World Central Kitchen to help support the people of Ukraine. You may recall my story about Das Bratmobile, well the owners Uschi and Ferdi reached out to me about the effort, and here’s what I learned.

World Central Kitchen (WCK) is a front-line organization that provides relief to areas affected by disaster or humanitarian crises by serving freshly made meals. They say it best on their website: “food relief is not just a meal that keeps hunger away. It’s a plate of hope. It tells you in your darkest hour that someone, somewhere, cares about you. This is the real meaning of comfort food. It’s why we make the effort to cook in a crisis.”

Instead of delivering ingredients or food stores from food banks to areas in need, WCK goes to the community in crisis and finds locals to help them cook and serve food the way the people of the area want it, the way they would eat if they weren’t in crisis. WCK has fed numerous communities after hurricanes, bushfires, volcanos, tornadoes, and during pandemics. They have fed asylum seekers and people in war-torn areas alike. They start rebuilding hope with food now, not next week or next month.

Currently, WCK has set up several locations in and around Ukraine to serve food to Ukrainians as they flee for safety. They are even supporting restaurants in areas that are under active attack, serving those who are staying to valiantly fight for their homes.

As a non-profit organization, WCK collects donations to continue its mission. Fish Creek Ranch’s Das Bratmobile has joined forces with The Washington State Food Truck Association (WSFTA) to encourage food trucks to raise donations for WCK. So far Das Bratmobile has gathered a total of $1155.00, which includes a generous donation of their own.

Food not only nourishes and energizes, but it connects people, it warms the soul, it bridges gaps, it lifts spirits. The people of Ukraine are in need of support. If you would like to help Das Bratmobile and WSFTA in their quest to support the people of Ukraine, please message Das Bratmobile’s Facebook page for information on how you can help. Or donate directly to WCK using the Donate button on their website.
